March 18, 1981 – Arthur Rand makes the owner of the financially strapped, Tier 2 bottom dwelling Sacramento Cyclones an offer he can’t refuse to move the team to San Diego. As die hard loyalists in Sacramento protest, the team and its facilities are loaded onto moving vans in the middle of the night and slink out of the city for their drive to southern California.
June 3, 1978 – The League proposes the name Crusaders for the New York team, but the city rejects it. Drawing on the famous headline from the tragedy, they declare the new franchise to be the New York Nightmare. The name Crusaders instead goes to the expansion team in Cincinnati. A coin toss places New York in Tier 1 and Cincinnati in Tier 2 for the start of the next season.
August 20, 1950 – The Detroit Mechanics, a heavy, hard hitting team, seriously injures an average of three opponents every game. Opponents take to calling them the Devils from Detroit.
